We recently blended modern design with functional elegance to transform the kitchen of this beautiful Type 20 flat within the iconic Barbican Estate.

The centrepiece of this contemporary kitchen is a sleek breakfast bar, with a vibrant yellow column featuring built-in display shelves. The bold and sophisticated pop of colour provides great interest. The addition of the pale blue chairs perfectly complement the column creating an inviting space for casual dining or entertaining guests. The bespoke, curved, floating storage above the breakfast bar, accessible from the kitchen, offers a practical storage solution.

We also designed, manufactured and installed a bespoke low shelf cabinet near the front door to provide further storage, while maintaining the streamlined look. This piece is ideal for displaying decorative items and keeping everyday essentials within easy reach.

The addition of our signature full-height door in the hallway offers an interesting architectural feature, while amplifying the natural flow of light between the rooms, to enhance the sense of space.

The bespoke, white, matt acrylic kitchen cabinets, complete with our modern version of the original Barbican integrated handle design, provide a functional, uncluttered aesthetic. Along with its practicality, the pale blue glass splash back reflects the light beautifully, adding to the bright and open feeling of the space. To complete this streamlined kitchen transformation, we installed bespoke wall cabinets with opaque, sliding glass doors above the worktops.

The practical Marmoleum flooring, patterned with small, scattered specks of colour, gives a terrazzo-like appearance. Marmoleum is Forbo’s signature linoleum flooring solution, made with up to 98% natural raw materials and climate positive without requiring offsetting. This eco-friendly material combines resilience with easy maintenance, making it perfect for high-traffic zones like kitchens.

The modern and elegant transformation of this Barbican kitchen has created a sophisticated, inviting space with functional and intriguing design features that meet the demands of contemporary living. At the same time, it honours the iconic, classic Barbican original design.
