Balancing Original Features with Modern Design in a Barbican Mews House

We recently completed this transformative project, integrating the heritage and original features of an amazing Barbican mews house with modern design. Our focus was to restore and rejuvenate key areas of the property, making the home both functional and aesthetically pleasing while preserving its original charm.

At the heart of the renovation is amber solid cork plank flooring, which not only adds warmth and texture to the living space but also offers durability and comfort underfoot. This flooring choice establishes a subtle yet inviting tone throughout the home, perfectly complementing the vintage aesthetic of the restored original teak stairs, banisters, and safety rails. The meticulous restoration of these elements by our skilled craftsmen highlights the craftsmanship of the past, allowing the home to retain its defining characteristics while embracing modern updates.

Throughout the property, walls were painted to harmonise the colour palette, creating a fresh backdrop that allows architectural details to shine. The once-worn original quarry tiles in the hallway received a thorough revamp, restoring them to their former glory while preserving their historical significance—an essential aspect of this renovation ethos.

We installed the client’s striking room divider shelving unit, tailored for art display. This feature provides an intriguing focal point while offering a functional storage solution.

The bespoke classic Thomson Brothers kitchen, along with petrol blue Marmoleum tiles, is complemented by an accent orange splashback for added visual interest. We preserved the original winding mechanism for opening the upper window, which serves as both a great talking point and an essential function.

In the bathroom, we showcased our expertise in bespoke craftsmanship with another classic Thomson Brothers design, enhanced by contemporary touches such as porcelain grey tiles, a bespoke mirrored cabinet, and a classic white bath and basin. The new, sleek, wall-hung toilet and the retention of the original classic Barbican basin beautifully marry old with new.

In alignment with the client’s vision, Marset light fittings were carefully chosen to enhance each area, fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout.

The newly created utility area was thoughtfully designed with storage cupboards surrounding the laundry machines, offering a practical solution that maintains the clean lines and cohesive feel of the home.

This project illustrates how a careful balance of design and functionality can create a harmonious living environment that respects the past while embracing the present. By prioritising quality materials and bespoke solutions, we delivered results that not only meet the unique needs of the client but also breathe new life into a historically special space.
