Original Features

As it is not always possible to preserve the original fittings or to acquire authentic Barbican pieces from the Barbican Salvage Store, we carefully source high-quality contemporary equivalents that seamlessly complement the building’s iconic design.

Door Handles

While we occasionally retain or restore original Barbican door handles, the ones shown here are modern reproductions. These updated versions faithfully echo the unique mid-century design of the originals, preserving the distinctive character of the estate.

Hinges

Similarly, the original hinges used in Barbican properties are a small yet crucial detail that contributes to the overall design continuity. We take care to refurbish or replace them with precision-matched alternatives.

Basins

Many Barbican properties feature distinctive original basins that can often be restored rather than replaced. Our approach ensures these elements retain their character while being fully functional.

Metal Kitchen control panels

Original, fully functioning Barbican kitchen control panels are a rare find when we embark on refurbishments. In a recent project, we installed a bespoke brushed stainless steel panel, meticulously crafted to echo the design of the original. These iconic panels, a hallmark of Barbican interiors, offer a timeless aesthetic that can be seamlessly enhanced with modern switches and updated functionality.

Gravity Handles

A signature feature of original Barbican joinery, the gravity handles are a defining detail we take great care to preserve or faithfully replicate, ensuring the integrity of the design remains uncompromised.

Flush Skirting & Cork Expansion Joint

In Barbican properties, skirting boards play a subtle yet essential role in preserving the clean, architectural lines of the space. We refine these details with precision, incorporating shadow gaps or flush finishes to achieve a seamless, uninterrupted transition between floor and wall.

Though not an original feature, the cork expansion joint seen here is a signature Thomson Brothers detail. In Barbican flats with underfloor heating, allowing for the natural expansion of wood is essential. Our precisely crafted edge-of-floor cork expansion joint ensures this flexibility while preserving a clean, seamless aesthetic.

Original Railings

We carefully restore the original wood stair treads, railings and coated metal railings found in Barbican properties, preserving their character while enhancing durability. The wooden handrails are meticulously sanded, repaired, and refinished to match their original warmth and grain. Meanwhile, the coated metal railings are stripped, treated, and refinished to restore their sleek appearance while maintaining their protective coating. Our approach ensures these iconic features retain their historical integrity while seamlessly blending with modern interiors.

ORIGINAL HIGH WINDOW OPENING LEVER

Some Barbican properties retain their original high-level window winding mechanisms, which we carefully refurbish or renew wherever possible to preserve their ingenuity and functionality.

ORIGINAL WINDOW FRAMES

Every property on the Barbican Estate features solid Sapele wood window frames with the distinctive rising handle opening system. When required, we strip and revarnish the internal frames to their original condition, preserving the building’s historic character.

Lighting Details

LED preserving the building’s historic character.

To enhance lighting throughout Barbican properties, we strategically install LED spotlights, offering a contemporary upgrade that align with the original architecture while providing warm, balanced illumination.

Accent Lighting Strips

In-built LED lighting within wardrobes and under cabinets is a discreet yet highly effective enhancement. Our approach is to install flush, seamless LED strips that provide soft, even illumination without disrupting clean lines.

Feature Display Shelves

Similar to the LED lighting strips, we also create bespoke LED-lit display shelves, adding both practicality and aesthetic appeal, subtly highlighting key architectural and decorative elements within the space.

Illuminated Stairs

For split-level Barbican properties, stair lighting strips can enhance both safety and ambiance, ensuring a soft, inviting glow that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding architecture.

Other Details

Bespoke Furniture Handle Details

Every detail, from the sleek lines of recessed pulls to the sculptural form of gravity handles, is meticulously considered, ensuring our bespoke furniture complements the architectural style of our projects.

Full Height Doors

Full-height doors are a defining feature in many of our projects, subtly enhancing space and light while staying true to the Barbican’s architectural character.

Custom Metalwork and Ventilation

Bathroom ventilation in Barbican flats often poses a challenge, as original extraction vents can lose efficiency over time. Rather than relying on standard off-the-shelf solutions, we craft bespoke stainless steel vents that blend seamlessly with the existing architecture.

A Commitment to Thoughtful Design

Every detail matters when refurbishing a Barbican property. Whether it’s a hidden lighting solution, a carefully designed expansion joint, or the restoration of an original handle, our approach is always guided by precision, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the estate’s architectural heritage. These considered details not only ensure that each refurbishment remains true to the Barbican’s design ethos but also elevate the spaces we work on, creating homes that are both functional and beautiful.

If you are considering a refurbishment within the Barbican Estate or the City of London and want to ensure every detail is meticulously handled, get in touch with us. We’d be happy to discuss how we can bring your vision to life while respecting the character of your home.
