A Considered Refresh: Bathroom Renovation at Bunyan Court

This recent project at Bunyan Court demonstrates how a thoughtful bathroom refresh can deliver a striking transformation without the need for a full scale refurbishment. For Barbican residents considering an update to their bathrooms, this approach offers an appealing balance of affordability, modern comfort and visual impact.

The brief was clear: breathe new life into the bathrooms while working smartly with the existing layout and services. Rather than stripping everything back to the shell, we focused on replacing key fixtures, introducing new surfaces and adding carefully considered storage solutions. The result is a space that feels entirely renewed, with all the benefits of contemporary design.

One of the most distinctive choices in this project is the vibrant green rubber flooring, which brings a bold pop of colour and a playful nod to the Barbican’s modernist spirit. Hardwearing, waterproof and easy to maintain, rubber flooring is also a supremely practical choice for a wet room environment. Its textured coin pattern adds subtle visual interest underfoot, while the vivid tone lifts the entire scheme and creates a lively contrast against the clean white palette of the walls and sanitary-ware.

The original white square tiles have been retained, providing a fresh, bright backdrop that enhances the sense of space and reflects light beautifully. By keeping these in place, cost and disruption are significantly reduced while preserving a surface that already works well within the scheme. Paired with sleek wall mounted Duravit sanitary-ware, including a bespoke, integrated basin and vanity unit with generous cupboard storage, the bathroom feels effortlessly modern and uncluttered. The wall hung toilet contributes to the streamlined look while also making floor cleaning far simpler.

A standout feature are the bespoke mirrored cabinets above the basin and toilet, which house multiple internal shelves offering ample concealed storage. This is the kind of detail that elevates a bathroom from good to exceptional, keeping everyday essentials close at hand without cluttering surfaces. Soft lighting beneath the cabinet over the basin adds a warm, ambient glow that enhances the atmosphere.

Bespoke low level storage cabinets, fit neatly under the basin to provide further practical storage without intruding on the room’s proportions. These cleverly designed units make excellent use of otherwise underutilised space, providing discreet storage for towels, cleaning supplies or bathroom essentials. The clean white finish ensures they sit seamlessly within the overall design.

The original bath has been retained and a bespoke white Corian surface has been mounted to the top to give it a clean, refreshed appearance. Paired with a frameless glass shower screen, new chrome fittings and wall mounted controls, it creates a neat, functional bathing area. The simplicity of the fittings keeps the focus on clean lines and ease of use, while the glass screen allows light to flow through the space uninterrupted.

In the bedroom, bespoke white fitted wardrobes provide generous storage with a clean, contemporary finish, while the original sliding door wardrobes have been freshly repainted to sit cohesively alongside the new cabinets.

We installed a beautiful, rich-toned bamboo floor that perfectly complements the original hardwood staircase. The staircase was meticulously sanded and refinished by our highly skilled French polisher, restoring its natural warmth and lustre. To maximise every inch of space, a bespoke cupboard was thoughtfully integrated beneath the stairs.

This project demonstrates that a bathroom need not be taken back to its shell to achieve a stunning transformative result. By investing thoughtfully in key elements such as fixtures, surfaces, storage and flooring, it is possible to create a space that feels contemporary, carefully considered, along with being entirely in keeping with the character of a Barbican home. For residents considering a refresh, this approach is well worth exploring.
